Enron E’s Exiting Houston for The Big Apple
HOUSTON, TX. (May 13, 2008) -
They graced the energy giant's towering corporate headquarters in downtown Houston. They were the brand for a corporation that rose to the pinnacle of success on Wall Street. They became the iconic image for one of the largest corporate scandals in American history. Now, they are bound for New York City.
Two Enron “crooked E” signs have been purchased by an anonymous buyer in NY for an undisclosed sum from their owner, Lou Congelio, principal of STANANDLOU Marketing // Advertising. The large, stainless steel signs are being prepared for shipment the week of May 19, 2008.
The larger of the two signs, the massive 400 pound stainless steel structure that stood outside Enron corporate headquarters at 1400 Smith, was originally purchased at auction for $8,500, well below the $43,000 and $33,000 paid for two similar signs sold at the first day of the Enron auction.
The second sign, a lighter and smaller version originally sold for $5,000 and was originally mounted on the wall behind the first floor security station at Enron headquarters.
Since 2002, the two shiny silver tilted “E” logos have served as decorative artwork and objects of discussion at the offices of STANANDLOU Marketing // Advertising which purchased them at Enron's bankruptcy auction. “This was a unique opportunity to own a piece of pop culture during one of the most turbulent times in our city's history. The "crooked E" became an instant symbol of corporate greed and corruption as news reporters from throughout the world stood in front of it to begin their daily news feeds outside ENRON headquarters at 1400 Smith, Downtown,” said Congelio.
Before the collapse, the Enron logo was a symbol of all that was good about corporate America and being a good, corporate citizen. Whenever there was a need, Enron would be first to help; always giving back to the community through philanthropy, employee charity workgroups, and providing leadership and new energy to a new Houston vision.
"The collapse of Enron was the single most important event of 2002, in Houston and America, forever changing people's lives, financial security and future, said Congelio.
